Robert Franklin Hilberg, 1929 - 2018

It is with a great sense of loss that the family of Robert Franklin Hilberg announce his passing from heart disease on Sunday March 11, 2018 at the age of 88. Robert was born in California, moved to Hawaii in 1991 and then to Ohio in 1994. In addition to many careers, Robert loved spending time with his family and shared his zest for the small joys in life. He was also quite the connoisseur of the corny joke. He will forever be lovingly remembered by wife, Daphne Hilberg, children Bill Hilberg, Hawaii, Carol Hilberg-Lau, Soleste Hilberg, and Robert Timothy Hilberg, California, step children Brent Brown and Rick Brown, California, Gidget Miller, Ohio, Cherish Wills, Iowa, and grandchildren: Daniel Lau, Eric Thompson, Kazuki Hilberg and Emi Hilberg. Robert was pre-deceased by his daughter Patricia Hilberg, and step children Charles, Ray and Debra Brown. At his request, there will be no service and his ashes will find their home on the Pali on Oahu where he has enjoyed warm water, enchanting sunsets and scenic hikes.

When his kids were growing up, Robert loved taking them to the park, to Armstrong Redwoods State Park, to Bodega Bay and Goat Rock Beach, to the San Francisco Zoo, Playland and Chinatown, to Oakland's Fairy Land, to Jack London State Park, to the Russian River, and so much more. His love for life continued to expand throughout his lifetime to include hiking at Point Reyes, trips to Santa Cruz, travel to the Big Island and Oahu, daily trips to Panera for coffee and a thin-sliced bagel over the paper and his latest book, extended hours at the library overlooking a lovely lake, and so much more. He could always find with ease ways to bring joy to his life and that of the many others that he loved. And he always expressed his love, appreciation and joy for his life, his friends, and his family.

Robert lived his life, always content with what he had, seeing the beauty and experiencing the joy in the moments of his day. He is known for saying, "this is the best... I've ever had/seen/done." It might be a walk, the sunset, a slice of cake, the sparkles on the water at sunrise, a cup of coffee, a meal, whatever. Of course, at times this could get a tad irksome. Please take a quiet moment to remember the joy and love that Robert brought to you.

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it."

“While you are walking, smile and be in the here and now, and you will transform that place into paradise."

“Yesterday is already gone. Tomorrow is not yet here. Today is the only day available to us; it is the most important day of our lives."

  1. Robert, I only wish I'd met you. You seem to have been a warm and loving dad and grandfather. The world always misses those who love, smile, read and share. Maybe we will talk at some future date. Peace follows you. Oahu beats Ohio.
